Citizens of Myanmar Share Firsthand Accounts of the Recent Coup
On February 1, 2021, Myanmar’s military staged a coup. They declared a state of emergency, seized power, nullified the recent election, and imprisoned the country’s democratically elected leaders. They also stifled communication, barring foreign journalists and cut off internet access.
The Tatmadaw (Burmese military) declared a year-long state of emergency, and deposed democratically elected leaders with their own general and military leadership. At least 150 people have been murdered since the coup as thousands more have been arrested in cities and townships across the country.
Countries have condemned the military coup and attempted takeover following the Myanmar election, as Burmese people protest daily in the street. Hundreds of people are missing among suspected human rights violations.
This panel will feature 3-4 diverse voices from citizens of Myanmar, who will talk candidly about what they have experienced and witnessed firsthand.
