True Crime and the Case for Abolition Documentary
True crime and the social justice documentary have long shared a penchant for narratives plotted through mysteries and misdemeanors. But critique of the criminal justice system is relatively new terrain for true crime. In their pursuit of innocence stories that showcase failings in the system, a new crop of true crime TV shows and podcasts align with the bipartisan promises of the contemporary prison reform movement, and its pitfalls. We discuss the collaboration between true crime and documentary, the socio-legal construction of criminality, and the false promises of reform, to argue for an abolition documentary that relinquishes, once and for all, its investments in guilt, innocence, and the category of crime.
