Turkish Westerns: European Cinema and Complex Connectivity
Zorro in Istanbul? A Turkish Tommiks? Ottoman Kovboys? This talk will consider the genre of Turkish Westerns and the strategies of popular film production in Turkey, which has moved from a practice of rip-off remakes to stand-up satire.
Randall Halle is the Klaus W. Jonas Professor of German Film and Cultural Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. His books include The Europeanization of Cinema, German Film after Germany, Queer Readings in Social Philosophy and the co-edited volumes After the Avant-Garde and Light Motives. His essays have appeared in journals such as New German Critique, Screen, Camera Obscura, German Quarterly, and Film-Philosophy. Halle works primarily on film and visual culture. He is currently pursuing two different projects tentatively entitled Interzone Europe: Nation-State Turkey as well as Visual Alterity: Seeing Difference.
