Before it was an award-winning 1957 film, Twelve Angry Men began as a teleplay. Written by Reginald Rose and produced for the Studio One television series, the teleplay was broadcast live on CBS on September 20, 1954. The teleplay follows much of the same script as the later film version. Twelve jurors meet in a New York City courthouse to decide the fate of a man accused of murder. In a single, hour-long scene, the teleplay examines the dynamics of consensus-building and the central tenets of the American adversarial justice system. This screening of the rarely viewed teleplay is a chance for insight into the classic film's roots in the explosive new medium of television.
