Between Fiction and Essay : Writer and Filmmaker Guo Xiaolu
Guo Xiaolu is a provocative and prolific screenwriter and director of features and documentaries, and a distinctive voice in contemporary literature in both Chinese and English. Raised by her grandparents in a fishing village, Guo later studied screenwriting at the prestigious Berlin Film Academy (with Jia Zhangke) and began making documentaries. Now based in London, she has published ten books, including the widely translated A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers (nominated for the Orange Prize 2007) and the new novel I Am China (Doubleday 2014) as well as poetry and essays in both Chinese and English. Across her work, Guo explores themes of alienation, memory, intimacy, and translation and develops her own vision of China’s past and its future in a global environment. Her books have been translated into 26 languages, and her films have shown widely at festivals including Locarno, Toronto, and New Directors/New Films.
