Beyond the Screen: Social Impact through Film

Through the last century, documentaries have played a pivotal role informing the public on issues of social and global justice and have served as calls to action, mobilizing citizens and leaders. This panel will feature alumni documentarians whose work has had an impact felt well beyond the theater. Panelists include Melissa Fitzgerald, C’87, actress and producer of "Staging Hope"; David Novack, ENG’86, PennDesign faculty and documentary filmmaker whose work includes “Burning the Future: Coal in America” and “Kimjongilia”; and Nancy Levy Novack, C’87, PennDesign faculty and Emmy award winning film editor whose work includes “The Accidental Advocate.”

Café Chavalos: Overcoming the Streets
Room 1206 in Steinberg Hall-Dietrich Hall | 3620 Locust Walk
Join the Association of Latino Alumni for a screening of "Café Chavalos: Overcoming the Streets," a documentary directed by Penn alumnus Alberto Chamorro, C'05, who will introduce the film and answer questions afterwards. Despite its coastal beauty and colonial architecture, Nicaragua's oldest city, Granada, is mired in unemployment, poverty, and violence. It is the poorest city in Central America where 80% of the population survives on less than $1 per day. The picturesque streets are littered with kids ("chavalos") who have succumbed to crime and drug addiction. The drug of choice due to its affordability and accessibility: glue-sniffing. With no means of receiving an education, learning basic job skills or finding employment, these kids are left with no options and no hope. This film follows Orlando, Oscar, Juan Carlos and Moises as they attempt to rehabilitate their lives through a program called Café Chavalos -- a culinary school, restaurant and rehab center. In their young lives, they have endured drug use, gang violence, abuse and family suicides, but miraculously found hope through the program. They learn to cook, wait tables and run a business. However, during the course of their own journey, when the Café runs into financial problems and is forced to close, how does that affect the boys? Refreshments will be served.

Amos Vogel and the Evolution of the Modern Film Festival

Before attending the closing night of the Philadelphia Film Festival, join fellow alumni and friends for a tribute to Amos Vogel, former Chair of Film Studies at the Annenberg School for Communication. Enjoy a panel discussion about Vogel's legacy and its impact on the evolution of the modern film festival. Panelists will include Robert Aibel, teaching assistant to Vogel during his time at Penn; Michael Chaiken, former Program Director for Film at International House Philadelphia and a close colleague of Vogel; Nancy Novack, C’87, Emmy award-winning film editor and student of Vogel; and Steven Vogel, Amos’ son.

The Philadelphia Film Festival presents FLIGHT

Join fellow Penn alumni and the Philadelphia film community for a sneak preview of the film FLIGHT, starring Denzel Washington, John Goodman, and Don Cheadle. Presented on the closing night of the 21st Philadelphia Film Festival, this pre-release screening will be attended by the film’s director, Robert Zemeckis, the Academy Award-winning director of Forrest Gump and Cast Away.
