This fall, Penn Alumni will host its second annual film festival during Homecoming Weekend – October 29 & 30, 2010. Co-curated by Penn alumni filmmakers David Novack, ENG'86 and Nancy Levy-Novack, C'87, the program schedule includes a workshop on the future of Hollywood, a documentary on a wrestling team with a 34-year winning streak, and a pre-release screening of a feature film from Sony Pictures. Each film screening will begin with several film shorts produced by current/recent Penn students, and will conclude with a discussion featuring the film's creators – a great opportunity to network with alumni in the film industry.
Class without Quizzes: Film Editing Workshop
Friday, October 29, 2:00-4:00pm
Whether you are working on a compilation of family videos or a submission to the Cannes Film Festival, this interactive workshop will guide participants through the process of editing digital media. Led by experienced film editor and alumna Nancy Levy-Novack, C'87, alumni will have the opportunity to hone their skills on their own projects. Participants will receive hands-on instruction as they transform their own videos from raw footage to seamless film. No prior experience necessary. Space is limited; advance registration is required. Class without Quizzes: The Future of Hollywood

The producers of this year's Academy-Award winning films are suing thousands of alleged pirates. Media giant Viacom has sued YouTube for one billion dollars. Is the Internet destroying Hollywood, replacing blockbusters with free content and amateur creations? Or is it—like television and the home video—a technology that will ultimately expand the media empires? Join associate professor and director of Cinema Studies, Peter Decherney, to talk about the Internet's impact on Hollywood, and to think about some of the (radical) proposals that both media companies and legislators have made to ensure a future for Hollywood. This moving documentary focuses on a high school wrestling team who began their 2007-08 season with a 439 match winning streak that lasted 34 years and was the national record for the most consecutive wins by any high school team in any sport. The wrestlers grapple with the weight of expectation that accompanies the pride and prestige of this legacy, learning along the way what it takes to be a champion. The film, nominated for an Emmy for Best Sports Documentary, features the families of two current Penn wrestlers. After the screening, join the curators of the Film Festival, David Novack, ENG'86 and Nancy Levy-Novack, C'87, for a conversation with the film's writer/director/producer, Jonathan Hock, C'85, as he provides a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the documentary.

The Association of Native Alumni invites all alumni to watch the critically acclaimed film, The Business of Fancydancing. Written, directed and featuring poetic works by Native author, Sherman Alexie, this film weaves motion and dance with stories of growth, death and the choices that define us. Seymour Polatkin is a successful, gay Indian poet who confronts his past when he returns to his childhood home on the reservation to attend the funeral of a dear friend. Light refreshments will be served.

Unwind after the football game by enjoying light refreshments and watching an exclusive pre-screening of the yet to be released Sony Pictures film, Just Go With It. A plastic surgeon played by Adam Sandler, romances a younger schoolteacher, Brooklyn Decker, but is forced to enlist his loyal assistant, Jennifer Aniston, to pretend to be his soon to be ex-wife, in order to cover up a careless lie. As the web of lies grows, the assistant's kids become involved, and everyone heads off for a weekend in Hawaii that will change all their lives. After the screening, Doug Belgrad, C'87, President of Columbia Pictures of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc., will answer questions about the making of the film, the current state of the film industry, and how his Penn education prepared him for life in Hollywood.
