The World Unviewed: Documation and Political Movement

In this talk, Karen Beckman embarks upon a new project that addresses the recent rise of animation within the context of documentary film practice.  Although we can see evidence of this trend in box office hits like Persepolis, Chicago 10, and Waltz with Bashir, Beckman will explore less well known and more experimental uses of animation by filmmakers who make work for a variety of exhibition contexts, including art museums, film festivals, and political activism. Why do documentary filmmakers turn to animation? What ethical and aesthetic issues does this turn bring to the fore? These and other questions will be asked and considered, although probably not answered.
