Of Diaries on Film, or the Velocities of 'Non Place'

Exploring the rich and distinguished heritage of film diaries and essay films, this talk discusses how many non-narrative films today are less concerned with the space of the image than with the velocities of the image. Drawing on the work of Paul Virilio, the talk will concentrate on an often overlooked film by British filmmaker Alan Clarke,  Elephant (1988),  a unique and powerful engagement with the velocities of northern Ireland where public life is less about place than about mistimings, nostalgias, displaced histories, and terroristic alarms.
