With the debut of THE FRENCH CHEF television show in 1963, Julia Child became one of the key cultural icons of the American sixties. By examining the pre-history of the cooking show before THE FRENCH CHEF, this paper attempts to account for the difference that Child brought to the genre -- and to television pedagogy more generally.
