Shakespearean Romance: Chick Flicks of the Deep Eighteenth Century
The talk is based on my new research in the Hanbury-Williams letters at the Lewis Walpole Library. It will have Garrick's Lear and Winter's Tale (Florizel and Perdita) woven into the lives of Williams's two daughters, who write extraordinary letters to him reporting on the London stage; but they are really working out their deeply troubled relationship with their remote and juridical Papa. They use the plays as what I call "synthetic experience," braiding the pathos of the celebrity actors and actresses into their own tortured family romance (in a proto-Hollywood kind of fandom).
There will be a screening of the film It (Clarence G. Badger, 1927)
before hand on Tuesday, April 22, at 5:00 pm in B3 Meyerson Hall.
