Unlocking the Power of "The Substance"
Winner of Best Screenplay at 2024 Cannes Film Festival
“Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself—younger, more beautiful, more perfect?” These are the words intoned by the voice Elizabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) hears as she struggles to get her life back after her boss (Dennis Quaid) fires her for daring to turning 50. GASP! If this dark and mysterious voice doesn’t grab you, the accompanying musical score by Raffertie may seal the deal. The dramatic body transformations in the last third of the film will likely put you over the edge—of HORROR.
Join PennNYC, the Association of Alumnae, Penntertainment & the Wharton Media & Entertainment Group to discuss this incredibly slick, clever, and creative (if somewhat disturbing) film with two experts from Penn’s Cinema & Media Studies Department, Ian Fleishman & Meta Mazaj.
Registrants will be sent a reminder email and Zoom link the morning prior to the event and again the day of the event at 5 PM ET. Please be sure to register before the second, automated email is sent.
Please Note: This event does not include a screening of the film.
