NEW ITALIAN CINEMA 2017

A free admission film festival made possible thanks to the support of

The Cinema and Media Studies Program and the Center for Italian Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Philadelphia and PI-Philly Italian Professionals in Philadelphia, present the 2017 edition of NEW ITALIAN CINEMA. The festival has been curated by Nicola M. Gentili (Penn, Cinema and Media Studies) and aims at showing very recent Italian released feature films in Philadelphia. Films are introduced and discussed with our Penn Italian Ph.D. candidates.

All movies in Italian with English subtitles.

Friday 1 December 

3:00pm | Il padre d'Italia (There is a Light) | Fabio Mollo, 2017
Paolo and Mia, an introverted clerk and a unconventional pregnant woman, go on a journey looking for the father of Mia's unborn daughter.

5:30pm | Tutto quello che vuoi (Friends By Chance) | Francesco Bruni, 2017
Alessandro is a 23-year-old who spends his days at the bar with his friends. Giorgio is a long-forgotten poet.

8:30pm | Dopo la guerra (After the War) | Annarita Zambrano, 2017
Bologna, 2002. Protest against the new Labor Law explodes in universities. The murder of a judge reopens old political wounds. Marco, a former left-wing activist who had been convicted of murder and for 20 years has lived in France, is now accused of having ordered the attack.

3:00pm | I figli della notte (Children of the Night) | Andrea De Sica, 2016
Giulio, a seventeen-year-old from a well-to-do family, is sent to an isolated boarding school in the middle of the Alps, where iron-clad rules limit all contact with the outside.

5:30pm | La tenerezza (Holding Hands) | Gianni Amelio, 2017
Lorenzo lives in an old building in the centre of Naples. He stopped caring about himself and his family. Things start to change when Fabio and Michela, a couple with children, move into the flat opposite Lorenzo’s.

8:30pm | Cuori puri (Pure Hearts) | Roberto De Paolis, 2017
Agnese and Stefano are profoundly different. Agnese is eighteen, lives with her harsh and devout mother, is a regular church-goer and is about to take a vow of chastity until she gets married. Stefano is twenty-five, with a violent temper and a difficult past behind.

Daisy and Violet are twin sisters on the verge of turning 18. They are blessed with beautiful voices and are sought after to sing at weddings, communions and baptisms. Their real draw is another trait which cloaks them in fascinating charm: They are siamese twins.

5:30pm | In guerra per amore (At War for Love) | Pierfrancesco Diliberto aka PIF, 2016
A love story intertwines with the allied conquer of Sicily during WWII, where the US Army had to find partners in the local society.

8:30pm | Fortunata (Fortunata) | Sergio Castellito, 2017
The story of a young mother with a failed marriage behind her, who fights daily for her dream to open a hair salon, challenging her fate in an effort to free herself and gain independence and right to happiness.
