Writer/Director Todd Solondz has been accused of many things: from being overly cynical and pessimistic to making “cruel” films that highlight the failings and trappings of “faux liberalism” or blind adherence to the mythos of the American dream. One thing is certain about the cult indie legend: no one can reproach Solondz for disingenuous filmmaking.

A master of his craft, Solondz is interested in exposing certain truths about the world and human nature through unflinching dramatic realism and bitter humor – what Solondz has referred to as his “sad comedies.” Instead of playing to the whims of an audience or a team of Hollywood studio execs, Solondz prefers to make earnest films that explore the remote recesses of what it feels like to be a person. The result: eight feature films to his credit, including Welcome to the Dollhouse, Happiness, Storytelling, Palindromes, Life During Wartime (Happiness‘ semi-sequel), Dark Horse and this year’s highly enjoyable and engaging Wiener-Dog.

In this two-hour Master Class, you will experience a little glimpse of what it’s like to be a student in Solondz’s graduate filmmaking course at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Imagine all of the knowledge you can reap about Solondz’s films, directing, and screenwriting in one unforgettable afternoon!
