40 Years of Black History at Penn

The Center for Africana Studies (CFAS) and the James Brister Society (JBS) co-host a special reception for alumni, past CFAS summer Institutes Participants, and Afro-American/Africana Studies majors/minors to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Center for Africana Studies at Penn. At 5:15 PM, a multimedia documentary directed by Tanji Gilliam, C'02, Afro-American Studies to Africana Studies: 40 Years at Penn, will be presented. The short film features archival footage of Black student and faculty activism and chronicles alumni experiences. This reception precedes the screening of Thunder Soul.

Thunder Soul

Told with style and pizzazz, the rousing documentary produced by Jamie Foxx, Thunder Soul, celebrates the Kashmere Stage Band, a worldwide sensation in the 1970s that will forever change the way you think about high school bands. When Conrad O. Johnson, a music teacher at a predominantly black high school in Houston, replaced the staid stage band standards with contemporary funk, jazz, and original compositions, he changed the lives of his students forever. Join us for a screening of this documentary that celebrates the transformative power of the arts in education. Film produced by Jamie Foxx.
