Remix before YouTube: Analog Remix Before The Internet
In this talk, I will be discussing the history and theory of fan vidding, a form of video remix practiced overwhelmingly by women and dating from the mid-1970s. Vidding is both a fair use and a feminist art form in which mass media texts have both their content and their genre transformed in thoughtful, artful, and emotional ways. While filmmaking has been a difficult field for women artists, vidding takes advantage of women's expertise in the editing room, resulting in an art form built around a female gaze and an eye for possibilities.
