Henrik Uth Jensen, Film Studies 1999 with a thesis on The Value and Meaning of Evaluation in Criticism. 1997-2002 Advisor on foreign film for Danish National Television. 2000-2010 Film Critic at daily Kristeligt Dagblad. Since 2000 Teaching film analysis and other subjects at Film and Media Studies, University of Copenhagen. Since 2007 head of Danish Film Critics responsible for The Bodil Award. Will spend this Autumn in Philadelphia wrestling the personal ambition of writing his first feature film.

Lars von Trier - The Early Years and The Shorts

The master of concepts and rules, Lars von Trier, obsessively sets up obstructions and restrictions to his vision. Most famous are the Dogma rules laid down with Thomas Vinterberg, but can this obsession with rules and rituals be traced in the director's earlier works?  We'll take a look at the early Trier – from the 16mm shorts created by the 12 yo Trier to the experimentals at the Cinema department of University of Copenhagen leading up to some of his better known shorts made at The Danish National Film School.  And then, finally, it's time to consider the unfinished Dimension announced at the release of Element of Crime. This monstrous feature film was supposed to be filmed over a period of 30 years, but was abandoned  after seven years of shooting with Eddie Constantine and Trier regulars Jean-Marc Barr, Udo Kier and Baard Owe.
