Timothy Corrigan won the 2012 SCMS Book Award

Timothy Corrigan's The Essay Film: From Montaigne, After Marker won the 2012 SCMS (Society for Cinema and Media Studies) Kovács Book Award.

The selection committee members had this to say about the book: “Well-written, articulate, and intellectually engaging, the book moves fluidly back and forth between an in-depth discussion of the essay film and its subtypes and detailed and insightful close readings of specific films that Corrigan gives to us in italics. He astutely remarks that what these films do is ask the film viewer to become a thinker, which is also, in fact, what his book does. This is a defining study of a vital and creative genre, a study that future books on the subject will have to cite.”

The formal announcement of the award will be made at the Award Ceremony of the 2012 SCMS Conference in Boston on Friday afternoon, March 23, 2012.

On behalf of the Penn community, dear Tim, please accept our warmest congratulations!
