Second Sunday Culture Films is an independent documentary series connecting the Wolf Humanities Center’s annual topic to a cultural theme. Borderless, our 2021-2022 theme, is inspired by the Center’s topic of Migration. Join us as we gather cultural perspectives from filmmakers across the world who focused their lenses on Indigenous peoples grappling with borders imposed on their land.

Border Nation (Tohona O'odham) 2020

19 min. Dir. Jason Jaacks

Ofelia Rivas was born just north of the U.S.-Mexico border, a place her ancestors have called home since time immemorial. Tohona O’odham tribal members live on both sides of a border imposed in the 1850s. Will invasions of ICE and the intrusion of the border wall allow their traditional way of life to survive?

You Are on Indian Land (Kanien’kéhaka/Mohawk) 1969

36 min. Dir. Michael Kanentakeron Mitchell

This film takes place in Akwesasne, a Mohawk Nation territory straddling the Canada-U.S. border. One day, the Mohawk decide to test their sovereignty in controlling the border on their land.

Speakers: Director Jason Jaacks in conversation with Stephanie Mach, Ph.D. Candidate in Anthropology and Academic Coordinator at the Penn Museum.
