Marina Johnston

Marina Della Putta Johnston is Lecturer in Foreign Languages and Assistant Director of the Center for Italian Studies, at the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her Laurea in Lingue e Letterature Straniere at the Università degli Studi di Venezia – Ca’ Foscari with a thesis on “Italian Migrants in Australia and Related Questions.” After moving to the United States, she completed her PhD in Italian at Penn with a dissertation on “Leonardo da Vinci's Codex Madrid I: The Creation of the Self as Author,” and taught at Saint Joseph's University and at Rosemont College, where she directed the Italian Studies Program. Marina regularly presents her research at national and international conferences. She still enjoys researching and teaching about migrations, but the focus of her studies is primarily Medieval and Renaissance literature and art grounded in the history of science. She has published articles on Leonardo, Antonio Averlino "Filarete", and Boccaccio, and she is currently collaborating with poet Taije Silverman on English translations of poems by Pier Paolo Pasolini and Giovanni Pascoli, some of which have been published or are forthcoming in Five PointsModern Poetry in TranslationPleiades, and Asymptote.
