What terrifies, fascinates, and offends us? The answers to this question are often significant indicators of past and present societal issues, as well projections of fears and uncertainties about the future. Italian Horror Films provide highly stylized, often uncomfortable, but always alluring lenses through which to examine and interrogate social matters, within and beyond Italy. In this course, we will reflect upon how Il cinema dell’orrore mirrors, reinforces, and challenges beliefs and taboos. We will consider how these representations serve as tools to better understand Italian Culture, past and present, applying what we learn to critically analyze broader temporal and global contexts.
