CIMS 232 - CONTEMPORARY BRAZILIAN CINEMA

PRTG 240 | LALS 240

The increasing importance of Brazil in the international scene has been aligned with the development of this country’s cinematic production. In the 1990s alone, three Brazilian films were indicated for a Best Foreign Oscar, but none of them called more attention than well-known productions portraying violence, criminality and poverty. As these types of movies illustrate, Brazilian directors have focused their lenses in “reality” and shown favor to social criticism covering an array of genres and themes. This course will consider the recent Brazilian cinematic production (“New Brazilian Cinema”), targeting the representations of Brazilian society, and/or critical depictions of its reality.
