EALC 132 - Chinese Cinema

This course is an introduction to Chinese language cinema in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the transpacific regions. It examines the diversity and dynamics of Chinese language cinema across political, linguistic, ethnic, and national boundaries. We will analyze various film genres such as martial arts cinema, ghost films, new documentary, and urban comedy; film movements such as Hong Kong’s Second New Wave and Taiwan New Cinema; film generations including the Fifth and the Sixth Generations; as well as film criticism, cinephilia, and fandom. Film directors examined may include Cai Chusheng, Fei Mu, Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Edward Yang, Tsai Ming-liang, John Woo, Wong Kai-war, Stanley Kwan, Ang Lee, and Jia Zhangke, among others. The course is taught in English, with all films subtitled in English. No knowledge of Chinese, no prior coursework in Chinese culture or film are required or expected.
