CINE 202 - International Novel and Film

What happens to a novel when it becomes a movie? This course will examine novels from several different countries and their film adaptations. The themes will be familiar—war, love, intrigue, survival_but the settings with be international. Possible novel/films include Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms (Italy and Switzerland); Kobo Abe's Woman of the Dunes (Japan); Alberto Moravia's Two Women (Italy); Nikos Kazantzakis's Zorba the Greek (Greece); Alexandr Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (Russia); Edna O'Brien's A Country Girl (Ireland); Maurice Pagnol's Jean de Florette (France); and Michael's Ondaatje's The English Patient (Europe, Africa). Course work will include frequent short analytical essays and a research paper on a novel and film of the student's choice.
