Auteurism on Trial: Spielberg and Copyright

Steven Spielberg has been involved in copyright disputes over most of his films from Jaws to Amistad. He has also led the successful charge to secure special legal protection for film directors in the U.S., protection that far exceeds the rights of artists in every other field. University of Pennsylvania professor Peter Decherney examines Spielberg’s impact on copyright law and the place of the auteur in American culture.
