CINE 215 - Indian Cinema

SAST 213 | GSOC 213
601 | W 4:30-7:30pm

If “Bollywood” has lately become synonymous with Indian cinema, there is a history to this development and a range of films all too often excluded from consideration. This course will reflect upon the growth and development of Post-Independence Indian cinema, looking at films made in a variety of Indian languages—Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, English—by a variety of Indian film directors, including Satyajit Ray, Raj Kapoor, Ritwik Ghatak, Shyam Benegal and Mani Ratnam, among others. Issues to be examined include the image of the Nation-State, Communalism, Gender, Stardom, and the Indian Diaspora. Requirements include weekly film viewings and lecture/discussions, three short papers, one longer paper and classroom participation.
